If you inspect the list of Revathi songs in Ragakairali, you will
observe that majority of them are composed by legendry Raveendran.
In my opinion, "Sree lathikakal" from "Sukhamodevi" is arguably
the best song (including carnatic compositions) composed in Revathi!
I will not even attempt to sing it without karaoke.

10th anniversary:രാഗകൈരളിക്ക് 10 വയസ്സ്

It was on June 13th 1997 that "Ragakairali", my ragam-wise
listing of Malaylam flm songs, went online for the first
time. That makes today the 10th anniversary of it coming
into existence in cyberspace. Here is the URL for the

Ragakairali is the first URL of its kind. Since then many
music portals and TV shows have started dealing with
raga-based film songs. Identifying ragas of film songs have
become a big hobby among serious music lovers. I have to
say that its not as easy as identifying the raga of a
classical music composition (Film music directors tone-down
the raga signatures a lot for mass appeal). But its definitly
an interesting puzzle to solve!

I take this opportunity to thank so many people who wrote
encouraging e-mails, identified ragas of songs that I
missed and also pointed out mistakes in the listings.

I participated and won an Anthakshari contest by Asianet TV.
The show will be telecast on Saturday May 19th 3PM in
India and US (1.30PM in UAE) in the "Sageetha Sallapam"
section of "American Jalakam". Please checkout the show.
Its a small segment.

I was not physically present at the recording as it was a
phone-in contest. I called from Boston to Chicago where the
program was recorded. They may show my picture on screen.
"Sangeetha Sallapam" was co-presented by my friend
and singer Ramakrishnan. Checkout his music blog

Oru murai vanthu::ഒരു മുറൈ വന്ത്

This is probably the best Tamil song ever
composed for a Malayalam movie. A Haunting melody
from ever green classic movie Manichithrathazhu
(മണിചിത്രത്താഴ്) by M.G Radhakrishnan, originally
sung by Sujatha.

The movie used this song in 2 parts during
Dr. Sunny's nocturnal encounters with
Nagavalli's spirit. Since it was used in bits
and pieces as low volume background song,
this great song never got the recognition it
deserves (compared to other songs in the film)

Tamil kriti - വാസന്തിയും ലക്ഷ്മിയും പിന്നെ ഞാനും!

This is a Tamil kriti on Vinayaka in ragam Vasanthi. I just performed
it today at the Boston SreeLakshmi temple at the beginning of their
"Natyanjali" dance festival.

My dance teachers heard the Vasantha varnam that I posted here
earlier and gave me this singing opportunity, for which I am
grateful to them. Also, thanks to my friend Kannan for
introducing me to this beautiful dance song and proof-reading
my Tamil-to-English transliteration. The original song has a
short alapana in Mohanam (Vasanthi differs from Mohanam only
in Dhaivatham) and tons of jathis, none of which are included
in my version.

Next is a varnam that I learned way back in 1996
from my guru Kumara Swamy Iyer. Varnams are
warm-up compositions sung at the beginning of
a concert. They try to convey raaga essence
in a short duration of time.

This varnam is a true roller coaster!

PS: I am mainly attracted to this song due to its
superb usage of rare raagas. Its really a challenge
to sing this raaga maalika. I *do not* endorse a

RagaKairali URL updated -- finally!

After a long gap of almost an year, I have updated
Raaga Kairly URL with more song-raga info.
The site is now ad-free, so delete your
cookies and temporary browser files if you
still see the annoying yahoo advertisement tab.
Thanks to my friend Balakrishnan, we now also have
google search in place. I have been getting
this request from many for a long time
and its genuine -- many times the "use model"
is that you know a song and want to know its
raagam, and there was no easy way to find this.

Search is not yet fully functional since many
raaga pages lost their google cache once I forced
frame on them. I have removed this and gave a
link to the main frame-page (and blog) in every
raga page. Search will be fully functional once
google caches all the pages.

3 raagas have matured to have a page of their own:
Vaasanthi, Sarasaangi and NaattaKurinji.
I do this once there are more than one known
songs in that raagam. There are many new entries
from new films like AnandaBhadram, MadhuChandralekha
Rasathanthram, Classmates etc..

Alarsara Parithapam::അലര്‍ശര പരിതാപം

For my first classical blog entry, I have chosen
a popular padam of Swathithirunal. ആ‍ദ്യ ക്ര്‌തി
മലയാളത്തില്‍ തന്നെയാകാമെന്ന് വിചാരിച്ചു. Its in raagam
Surutti and as the name suggests, this raga
has a very coiled ("ചുരുട്ടിയ") structure. This
sringara padam has become popular thru the biopic
"Swathithirunal(സ്വാതിതിരുനാള്‍)" by Lenin Rajendran.
It is also often used in mohiniyattam.

Surutti is a very South Indian raaga and I will be surprised if it
has a Hindustani equivalent. Raaga Kairly lists 4 film songs in this raagam. My favorite is the Chithra-Krishnachandran duet "Vanasree mukham nokki(വനശ്രീ മുഖം നോക്കി)..."

How it all began.....

For years, I have been thinking about putting my songs as part of raga kairaly(രാഗകൈരളീ) URL, my raagam wise listing of Malayalam film songs.

But life got busy with creating a new life in a foreign country, work etc, added with laziness. I completed 6 years in USA on2006 Aug 21st!(phew!!!) കാലം പോ‍യ പോക്ക്!

Recently I forged my ties with Malayali community here in Boston and performed at the Christmas 2005 and Onam 2006 functions. While practicing with karaoke tracks for the onam programme, I recorded my song and mixed it with the track, solely for the purpose of feedback and correction. When I listened to it later, it appeared kind of cool and my desire to publish my songs online got re-ignited. Thus, "ragakairali" blog was born!

There was no concept of a blog when I started ragakairaly URL way back in 1997. You can read about my musical musings here. I hope to unearth un-noticed gems of songs in my own voice here. May be delve a little bit into underlying raagas. I also hope to present some carnatic compositions I learned, before I totally forget them..
